A few weeks ago at a planning meeting we started to discuss a way of getting kids into reading the bible as well as memorising scripture so that they have a strong foundation in it.
Admittedly we've been a bit slack with that, and we tend to teach 'concepts' and back them up with scripture rather then the other way round.
An idea we started to process was a progressive thing where kids learn a verse, get it ticked off then go on to the next one, kinda like girl guides where you get a badge for achieving stuff. We would provide a range of ways of learning it to suit learning styles and help them to really think about what it means for them rather then simply learning it.
It's a really good idea, but for some reason it just doesn't feel right to me. I think maybe it would become an elitist sort of thing where a few kids are ahead and the others find it hard to get motivated.
I have another idea that we'll trial for a couple of months. I came across somthing called a "7 Day Challenge" (hat tip to www.max7.org), where the kids are given a verse they need to learn of something that they can do during the week to remind themselves of what they have learnt.
If we issue the 7 Day challenge based on what we've learnt that week, they can do it, get parents to sign it and go into a draw for a prize box. It's simple, easy prizes. It's got weekly incentive, rather then a longer term thing, and it's reinforcing learning from Sunday during the week.
Got any feedback?

Salt Shakers Summer Challenge
A few different thoughts have been floating around in my head and then all of a sudden came up with this idea...
A summer Bible reading challenge!
I'm going to make up little booklets with a Bible verse each day of the school holidays. The kids read it, write a short journal, get their parents to sign it, then at the end of the summer they can get a prize for doing it.
For the 5-6 year old their parents will have to helo them read it, and 7 ups can do it themselves. What do ya recon?
Here are some questions I have...

- How do we allocate the prizes? Does it depend on how much they get through etc

yet another idea
I tend to get an idea to do something and I can't think about anything else until I do it.
Yep, this blog is one of those ideas!
